I wasn't planning on Blue Herons being the first true post on this blog of truth but I was taking a walk yesterday and it flew in front of me, then walked next to me on the bridge I was on. Looking at me with its creepy eye. I mean look at this thing:
It knows what I'm up to here. I had to look away before it peered into my soul.
Crazy, right? Not so much. Don't let them fool you. They've been around a LONG time and worshipped by many civilizations. Let's start with the Egyptians.
According to mythlok.com, in ancient Egyptian mythology, the Bennu bird was regarded as the ba of Re. During the Late Period, the sign used to spell the name of the sun god was based on the bird’s image. According to some sources, the ancient Egyptian bird, Bennu, was a powerful deity that had various abilities. Some of these include being able to create himself and fly over the Nun’s waters. He was also able to establish a call that helped determine the order of things and the nature of creation. The Benu bird was able to renew itself every day, as well as every 500 years. It was also associated with the sun god, Atum, and the underworld god, Osiris. It symbolized rebirth and resurrection.
According to www.spiritanimals.org, the blue heron is associated with the gods in certain Celtic mythology and is shown as benign. Rhiannon was a fierce protector who frequently assisted lost travelers. All mystical waters were under its control. Rhiannon, the Goddess of deep waters, is claimed to have taken on the form of a heron and earned the title “Lady of the Lake.”
Then of course this "Lady of The Lake" was actually the deity who gifted Arthur the sword Excalibur. Then resumed being a heron again.
The list goes on and on through history. Minoan frescoes in Crete, Native American totem poles, Chinese ink paintings.
Want more proof? The Greeks believed the heron was a messenger from the gods. The heron was thought to have been sent by Athena and Aphrodite, the goddesses of wisdom and love. Athena, for example, once sent a heron to Odysseus during his odyssey as a sign that she was watching him. Celtic mythology had herons as messengers of the gods as well and thought the herons were imbued with superior intelligence.
So now we have this ancient deity with superior intelligence who delivers messages for the gods who can turn into a human and was here before creation and can renew itself and resurrect itself every 500 years. Oh yeah which also makes it the Phoenix. Thanks Dumbledore.
What else can the "Heron" do? Who knows. This one is almost beyond conspiracy and entering into "F* around and find out" territory. I doubt even the government messes with these things. But next time you see one on a walk and it makes eye contact with you just hope that it hands you a mystical sword and makes you king of something instead of using it's godlike powers to spear your eyeballs.
Until next time.
I am Snickers.
I am truth.
